Candidates can use AI tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT) during at least one round. The problems are larger and more open-ended than classic algorithm puzzles. And the evaluation rubric weights judgment, prompt fluency, and code review skills as much as raw implementation.

2. Problems are larger and more open-ended

Classic algorithm interviews tested whether the candidate could implement a single, well-defined algorithm in 30 minutes. The problem was small, the requirements were precise, and the bar was correctness plus optimal complexity.

  • Develop a prompting style for code generation. What you ask the AI matters substantially. Vague prompts produce vague code. Specific prompts with explicit constraints produce better code.
  • Practice verification. AI-generated code often looks right but isn't. Build the habit of running the code, reading it carefully, and identifying what the AI missed before declaring done.

Verifying before trusting. A strong candidate runs the AI's output through actual execution before accepting it. They notice when the AI confidently produces code that looks right but uses an API that doesn't exist, or that handles a case the AI hallucinated rather than the case actually present in the problem.

Iterating on prompts rather than accepting first output. Strong candidates treat the first AI response as a draft. They refine the prompt with the constraint they actually need, push back when the AI produces unnecessary complexity, and reject suggestions that don't fit the codebase's patterns.

Knowing when not to use the AI. The strongest candidates use AI tools selectively rather than reflexively. For trivial syntax questions, they use AI; for understanding the codebase's architectural choices, they read the code directly. Reflexive AI usage on every step signals lack of confidence rather than fluency.

Owning the output. When the interviewer asks "why did you do it this way," a strong candidate explains the reasoning. A weaker candidate says "the AI suggested it." The candidate is responsible for the code regardless of where it came from; demonstrating that ownership is part of the signal.

Common pitfalls

Several patterns observed in candidates who underperform in modern engineering loops:

Over-reliance on AI in fundamentals rounds. Some candidates have lost the ability to write basic code without AI assistance. When the no-AI round arrives, they struggle with patterns they used to know cold. Practicing both modes (with and without AI) keeps the underlying skill maintained.

Treating prompt-engineering as a separate skill. "Prompt engineering" as a labeled discipline is less important than candidates often think. The skill is more accurately described as "specifying what you actually want" — which is just clear thinking about requirements, applied to AI tools. Candidates who treat it as arcane usually struggle more than those who treat it as ordinary specification work.

Pasting AI output without reading. Reading the AI output carefully is non-optional.

Avoiding AI tools out of pride. Some candidates explicitly refuse to use AI in rounds where it's allowed, on the theory that "real" engineering doesn't need them. A 4-week prep plan
